She got comfortable and aimed like she was taught. Taking two short breaths she fired. Most of them started to run but one stopped moving. Monique turned to find the wolf closer to her.

“There. I’m almost done. Just have to hike down and clean it and we can head back to camp.” Before he could say anything, she started to move down the hill. She was so glad that the heard had come this way. It was almost like it was meant for her. She shook the uneasy feeling in her stomach and kept on her path toward her kill. When they reached the base of the hill Alaric shifted.

“What the hell are you thinking?”

“I’m thinking that I need food on my table and that deer that I just shot is my food. Why are you so damn upset?”

“Because I’m trying my hardest to protect you and this could be a damn ambush!”

“An ambush started by a heard of deer roaming into my scope. Yes, that sounds plausible.” She shook her head trying her hardest not to laugh. Part of her was thinking the same thing but that seemed like a stupid way to get someone into the open. Hell, I could have been going for antelope or a buck and they wouldn’t have known.

“You’re a frustrating woman!”

“And what kind of women are you used to?” She turned to look at Alaric to find a smirk on his face.

“Women listen to me, human and wolves alike with the exclusion of you.” This time Monique couldn’t keep the laugh from escaping.

“So, you like your women without brains. Interesting.” She shifted her gun on her shoulder.

“They have brains; they also just know when to listen.” Alaric stood tall; Monique stifled a snort.
